Know Your Skin Type And Practice Good Skin Care
The skin is the body’s largest organ and its main function is to protect against heat, ultra-violet light, infection and injury. The skin also regulates body temperature, provides a waterproof barrier to prevent loss of body fluids, and it responds to five of our six senses. The surface ofthe skin constantly sheds dead cells, which are renewed every 30 days. Good skin care is important, as unclean skin attracts bacteria, which thrives on sweat and sebaceous gland secretions.
Your skin type is usually the same as one of your parents. You may have smooth clear skin, or have problems with dry, sensitive or oily skin. Whateverskin type you have, you need to look after it. Knowing your skin type is very important so that you do not use incorrect products.
There are four skin types in the different skin color ranges - oily, dry and sensitive, or a combination of all. If your skin is dehydrated and lacking in moisture, it is considered dry. Dry skin has very little elasticity and may be sensitive to sun and wind.
The best way to care for dry skin is to wash daily with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water. Always rinse with warm water and gently pat your skin dry. Avoid using harsh commercial soap. Apply a rich moisturizer to your skin to act as a barrier to the weather.
Sensitive skin can be difficult to care for as it can flare up suddenly and become tender and sore. Avoid cleansers or toners that contain alcohol because these will further irritate sensitive skin. Use cleansers and lotions with calming natural ingredients that are free of irritants. Consult a dermatologist who can recommend the correct products for your skin.
The most common type of skin type is combination skin. If you have combination skin it will be dry on your cheeks and on the sides of your face, with an oily panel in the centre. You can use products for oily skin on the oily parts. For the rest of your face, use products to treat dry skin.
