Cosmetic dentistry for the professional - Cosmetic dentistry to suit your lifestyle
Unless you’re lucky enough to already have a perfect smile, most of us wish we could straighten our teeth to give us the confidence to put our best grin forward. As an adult, however, you probably think it’s too late to correct your smile. And at your age, you’re certainly not going to wear metal braces (also known as ‘train tracks’). But you can’t help thinking how much more confident you’d be at work if you could do something to improve your teeth – presentations in front of the team would seem far less daunting! We all know a ‘winning smile’ can help to make an impression. Now there’s a way to achieve a beautiful smile without showing your braces. Invisalign is a new approach to cosmetic dentistry which offers virtually invisible braces to straighten teeth, in as little as 9 to 18 months (depending on the condition of your teeth).
Options out there for straightening your teeth
If you are thinking about cosmetic dentistry, there are various types of braces out there, including braces with metal or ceramic brackets and lingual braces, which are fitted on the inside of your teeth. The latest option is Invisalign, which uses a clear aligner that is removable and comfortable. Invisalign is successful in treating a wide range of conditions such as over crowded or widely spaced teeth, overbites and even crossbites. Invisalign is different from the other types of braces available for a number of reasons. Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign:
• Is clear: almost no one will be able to tell that you are straightening your teeth.
• Is removable: unlike traditional braces, you can eat and drink what you want during treatment. You can also brush and floss your teeth more easily to maintain better oral hygiene
• Is comfortable: there are no metal brackets, wires or sharp edges to cause mouth irritation. This also means less time spent in your dental practitioner’s chair getting adjustments
• And best of all, because Invisalign is a virtually invisible brace technique, most people won’t notice you’re in treatment
Of course you want to look great, at work, at social functions, or while out with friends. Maybe you speak to groups or conduct meetings. You still can. Because Invisalign is clear and nearly invisible, most people will never know you’re straightening your teeth – unless you tell them. And because Invisalign aligners have no metal brackets or wires that can poke into your mouth, you can be as active as you like. Since Invisalign is removable, just take the clear aligners out for special events or personal occasions. And when your course of treatment has ended, you can feel more confident, whether in front of people or not. You’re going to have a stunning smile.
The Invisalign treatment starts with a visit to an Invisalign-certified dental practitioner who will take x-rays, photographs and moulded dental impressions of your teeth and send these to the Invisalign laboratories with a ‘treatment plan’. Using your personal dental profile, the unique Invisalign software will generate a 3-D movie to show you how your teeth will move during your planned treatment. From this, a series of custom made clear plastic ‘aligners’ are made. Each set of aligners is worn for about 14 days and as each aligner is replaced with the next in the series, teeth are moved gradually over time. Treatment length will vary depending on the condition of your teeth - but the average Invisalign treatment is 9 to 18 months. During your treatment, you should visit your dental practitioner periodically, until it is determined that your treatment is complete. Then, all that remains is to show off your beautiful new smile. Even though it’s one of the latest developments in cosmetic dentistry, Invisalign is similar in price to treatment with metal or ceramic brackets and around half the price of treatment with lingual braces.
