Essential Vitamins

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

There are a number of essential vitamins that the body needs to function properly and it is possible to take these in the form f a vitamin supplement. The majority of people do not have a balanced diet and they may be lacking in certain vitamins which means that they require a vitamin supplement to ensure that they do not have a deficiency of an essential vitamin. A health professional or dietary technician is the best person to give advice on any vitamin supplement that a person should take. It is important to seek professional advice before taking any vitamin supplement. This is because there are some vitamins that can be toxic if too much is consumed and a vitamin supplement may not be appropriate if there is enough of the vitamin already in the food a person eats.health1

Some categories of people may require more types of vitamin supplement than others. Vegetarians are often deficient in certain vitamins that are only found in animal products, for example, and a vitamin supplement is the ideal solution to this problem. Vegetarians do need to be aware that some vitamin supplement manufacturing processes involve animal products and it is important for them to read the labels. A large number of synthetic vitamin supplement products are available which will enable a vegetarian to take them without contravening their dietary beliefs or needs.

Children will often need a vitamin supplement, especially when they are extremely young. This is because a lot of children do not eat a sufficient variety of foods in their early years and a vitamin supplement can help compensate for this natural deficiency. Breast feeding has long been recommended as a source of all the essential nutrients but women who choose not to or are unable to bottle feed may be concerned as to whether their baby needs a vitamin supplement. The large majority of baby milk formulas contain additional vitamins to prevent the need for a vitamin supplement to be given. It is important to discuss any concerns over the need for a baby or child to take a vitamin supplement with a health professional to ensure that the correct solution is found.

Know Your Skin Type And Practice Good Skin Care

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

The skin is the body’s largest organ and its main function is to protect against heat, ultra-violet light, infection and injury. The skin also regulates body temperature, provides a waterproof barrier to prevent loss of body fluids, and it responds to five of our six senses. The surface ofthe skin constantly sheds dead cells, which are renewed every 30 days. Good skin care is important, as unclean skin attracts bacteria, which thrives on sweat and sebaceous gland secretions.health1

Your skin type is usually the same as one of your parents. You may have smooth clear skin, or have problems with dry, sensitive or oily skin. Whateverskin type you have, you need to look after it. Knowing your skin type is very important so that you do not use incorrect products.

There are four skin types in the different skin color ranges - oily, dry and sensitive, or a combination of all. If your skin is dehydrated and lacking in moisture, it is considered dry. Dry skin has very little elasticity and may be sensitive to sun and wind.

The best way to care for dry skin is to wash daily with a rich, creamy cleanser and warm water. Always rinse with warm water and gently pat your skin dry. Avoid using harsh commercial soap. Apply a rich moisturizer to your skin to act as a barrier to the weather.

Sensitive skin can be difficult to care for as it can flare up suddenly and become tender and sore. Avoid cleansers or toners that contain alcohol because these will further irritate sensitive skin. Use cleansers and lotions with calming natural ingredients that are free of irritants. Consult a dermatologist who can recommend the correct products for your skin.

The most common type of skin type is combination skin. If you have combination skin it will be dry on your cheeks and on the sides of your face, with an oily panel in the centre. You can use products for oily skin on the oily parts. For the rest of your face, use products to treat dry skin.

Bird Flu Information and Update Bird Flu Information and Update

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Laboratory tests have confirmed that bird flu was the cause of death of a middle-aged Indonesian male in November 2005. The man was the 14th fatality of bird flu infections in Indonesia, and the ninth bird flu case confirmed by the World Health Organization after the case was sent by local health officials to Hong Kong for verification. health3

The confirmation brings to 70 the number of people in Asia who have died in the last two years from the H5N1 strain, now considered the deadliest avian influenza virus subtype. Antiviral medications such as amantadine and rimantadine, which are usually given to treat influenza, do not work on the avian flu virus. Drugs are being developed and temporarily used on patients who appear to have succumbed to the avian flu disease. Although they appear to be responding to treatment and are showing improvements, further tests need to be done to ensure the effectivity of these new drugs.

Humans infected with the avian flu have symptoms that include a fever, sore throat or muscle pain, which are similar to symptoms of human influenza. Thus, it is easy to mistakenly diagnose an actual avian flu as human influenza. However, humans infected with avian flu would have worse symptoms  eye infections and respiratory problems that could become life threatening.

Before the bird flu, there was a disease that came from bovines, commonly known as mad cow disease. This disease came about from the practice of feeding cattle with processed foods. Later on, the cows developed an infection in the brain. The infection caused cows brains to produce sponges, which made the animals go wild and die. Humans who ate meat from infected cattle fell sick and died. To rid of the mad cow disease problem, entire livestock were slaughtered, killed and burned. This prevented the outbreak from reaching other farms. Slaughtering infected cattle was done in many countries in the Asian region, including parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.

The Best Homemade Wrinkle Removers

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Although there are many quality wrinkle remover creams out on the market, don’t be fooled into thinking that there aren’t natural wrinkle treatments out there too — because there are. As a matter of fact, you can probably create your very own homemade wrinkle cream with things found around your home.health2

Here Are A Few Natural Ways To Get Rid Of Wrinkles…

Honey is one of the best home made wrinkle removers available. All you have to do is thinly spread the honey onto your face and leave it there for about 25-30 minutes. Once the time elapses, wash away the honey with warm water and then gently rub an ice cube all over your face — more specifically, rub the ice cube on the places where the honey was applied. An important thing to remember before starting this home wrinkle remedy is to wash your face with warm, borderline hot, water. This allows the pores in your skin to open up, thereby increasing the effectiveness of the honey.

Bananas can be used to make a very effective, natural anti-wrinkle cream. Simply mash up a banana or two until the banana(s) becomes cream like — this shouldn’t take long. Once it is in a creamy form, apply it liberally to your entire face. Let it sit for around 30 minutes and then rinse it away with warm water. Pat dry your skin; do not rub dry it.

Pineapple is another great homemade wrinkle remover. Begin by cutting out the core of the pineapple. Once removed, take the core and gently rub it on your face, making sure you get all the problem areas; around the mouth, under & around the eyes, etc. Leave the thin layer of pineapple juice on your face for about 20 minutes, then you can wash it off with warm or cold water.
