Natural Pomegranate Juice

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Pomegranate juice, are used in the western kitchen quite rarely & mostly as just another taste enhancers. However, recent studies have suggested that it might be adding more than just the taste to your favourite food items. But don`t be anxious, these are mostly beneficial. Although scientists are yet to reach a conclusion, the initial testing have suggested that it might as well be a key to healthy living especially the natural pomegranate juice is a source to quite a number of key nutrients. My friend has been a big advocate of increased usage of pomegranate juice in the modern food items. She believes that nature holds the key to, many of the modern problems be it stress related or otherwise. However, a good & balanced diet can help us overcome most if not all of the problems. So, I`ve started to use them more & more nowadays too. Although I myself, am not too sure of the health benefits accruing out of it… I would still not mind having some of its juice just for a different flavour & welcome change from the other juice that I have got used to. If there are some other health related benefits that’s to be had then, it’s a bonus for me.

Medicare Health Insurance Plan Cuts

Monday, December 28th, 2009

One of the primary questions about Congress’ moves towards healthcare reform is how they are planning to pay for it. A variety of budget cuts and tax increases have been proposed by the House of Representatives and the Senate in order to provide affordable health care. Many are especially worried about the impact of the Senate’s proposed decrease in Medicare health insurance plan spending. However, a prominent senior citizen association recently announced that they support the Democratic bill, which includes approximately $460 billion in Medicare cuts. Why would they back legislation that may harm people over the age of 65, half of whom are card-carrying members?

Detractors would point to their history of supporting many laws proposed by Democrats, and say that the group is too cozy with that party. The group takes a different view; CEO A. Barry Rand told its members that the proposal would not reduce any guaranteed benefits associated with the government-sponsored health insurance plan. Moreover, he pointed out that Medicare has recently been plagued by inefficiency, waste, and fraud–eliminating such expenses should cover most of the shortfall. Some believed that such wasteful spending is inevitable when the federal government is involved, making their support of a public option (effectively taking the form of “Medicare for all” health insurance plan) ludicrous.

Republicans such as Senator John McCain warn that the cuts will target some of the add-on benefits many seniors have come to expect from Medicare Advantage. These benefits often include gym memberships to maintain their fitness, in addition to higher quality vision and dental care. A Medicare Advantage health insurance plan is sold by private insurers as a supplement to standard Medicare. Proponents of the healthcare reform bill admit that Medicare Advantage programs will face the bulk of the cuts in federal funding, but accuse the health insurance plan providers of using the partially subsidized premiums primarily to finance corporate profit margins for their shareholders and exorbitant salaries of their executives.

Bird Flu Information and Update Bird Flu Information and Update

Friday, December 25th, 2009

Laboratory tests have confirmed that bird flu was the cause of death of a middle-aged Indonesian male in November 2005. The man was the 14th fatality of bird flu infections in Indonesia, and the ninth bird flu case confirmed by the World Health Organization after the case was sent by local health officials to Hong Kong for verification. health3

The confirmation brings to 70 the number of people in Asia who have died in the last two years from the H5N1 strain, now considered the deadliest avian influenza virus subtype. Antiviral medications such as amantadine and rimantadine, which are usually given to treat influenza, do not work on the avian flu virus. Drugs are being developed and temporarily used on patients who appear to have succumbed to the avian flu disease. Although they appear to be responding to treatment and are showing improvements, further tests need to be done to ensure the effectivity of these new drugs.

Humans infected with the avian flu have symptoms that include a fever, sore throat or muscle pain, which are similar to symptoms of human influenza. Thus, it is easy to mistakenly diagnose an actual avian flu as human influenza. However, humans infected with avian flu would have worse symptoms  eye infections and respiratory problems that could become life threatening.

Before the bird flu, there was a disease that came from bovines, commonly known as mad cow disease. This disease came about from the practice of feeding cattle with processed foods. Later on, the cows developed an infection in the brain. The infection caused cows brains to produce sponges, which made the animals go wild and die. Humans who ate meat from infected cattle fell sick and died. To rid of the mad cow disease problem, entire livestock were slaughtered, killed and burned. This prevented the outbreak from reaching other farms. Slaughtering infected cattle was done in many countries in the Asian region, including parts of Eastern Europe and Russia.
